Amazon product photo requirements — the MAIN image rules that matter
Amazon enforces strict rules on a listing’s MAIN image (the one buyers see in search results). Break the technical specs and the upload fails; break the styling rules and the image can be removed — and without a compliant main image your listing can be temporarily suppressed from search. Below is the practical summary, sourced from Amazon Seller Central help page G1881 (checked October 2026).
Technical specs (apply to every image)
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Formats | JPEG (recommended), TIFF, PNG, non-animated GIF |
| Size — hard floor | Longest edge ≥ 500 px (below this the upload is rejected) |
| Size — zoom | Longest edge ≥ 1000 px recommended (unlocks zoom); max 10,000 px |
| Resolution | ≥ 72 dpi |
| Color | sRGB preferred |
| Quality | Sharp, in focus, no pixelation or jagged edges |
MAIN image styling rules
| Rule | What Amazon says |
|---|---|
| 🔴 Background | Pure white — RGB values 255, 255, 255 |
| 🔴 Occupancy | “Show the product as 85% of the image” — the product (and nothing else) should fill most of the frame |
| Completeness | Product must fill the frame — not cropped off, not cut out of the photo |
| One product | One unit per image (plus included accessories); don’t show multiple angles in one shot |
| No packaging | Don’t photograph the box unless the packaging is the product’s key feature |
| No extras | No text, logos, watermarks, price tags, promo badges (“Best Seller”-style), review screenshots |
| Mannequins | No mannequin parts for most categories; shoes = single shoe facing left; apparel lays flat (adults: on a model) |
| AI disclosure | Photorealistic AI-generated people require an IPTC metadata marker (contains-synthetic-performer) — edited real photos don’t |
What happens when you break them
- Technical specs (size, format): upload fails — you’ll know immediately.
- Styling rules (background, occupancy, props): image can be removed after publication.
- Missing or non-compliant main image: listing can be temporarily suppressed from search — the expensive failure, because it happens quietly.
Skip the manual work
Our in-browser white background tool applies the three hard MAIN rules automatically —
pure #FFFFFF background, subject centered at 85% occupancy, 2000×2000 sRGB JPEG — and verifies
the result before you download. Photos are processed on your own device and never uploaded.
