Shopify product image sizes — what’s required and what works best
Shopify is a storefront platform, not a marketplace: there is no enforced white-background or occupancy rule for product photos. What Shopify does enforce is a hard pixel/megabyte ceiling. Here’s the practical summary from the Shopify Help Center (checked October 2026).
Hard limits (enforced)
| Item | Limit |
|---|---|
| Megapixels | ≤ 20 MP — computed as (width × height) ÷ 1,000,000 |
| File size | ≤ 20 MB |
Recommendations (not enforced)
| Item | Shopify’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution | Upload up to 5000 × 5000 px (or 25 MP) for best quality — Shopify’s CDN downsizes for you |
| Formats | JPEG, progressive JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC native; SVG limited; PSD/TIFF/BMP auto-converted on upload |
| Color profile | Embedded ICC profiles are stripped on display; files without a profile are treated as sRGB — export as sRGB to keep colors predictable |
| Delivery | Shopify CDN auto-selects WebP/AVIF and compresses — upload high quality, let the platform optimize |
So… white background or not?
Marketplace rules (like Amazon’s MAIN image) don’t apply to your own Shopify store. That said, most high-converting product pages use a consistent, clean background — usually pure white or a single lifestyle scene per gallery — because consistency reads as professionalism. Treat white background as a brand decision, not a compliance item: if you sell on both Amazon and Shopify, using the same white-background shot on both keeps your catalog coherent and saves a second editing pass.
One-click outputs for both
Our in-browser tool produces Amazon-compliant 2000×2000 white-background JPEGs that also work perfectly as the first Shopify product image (well under the 20 MP/20 MB limits, sRGB). Everything runs locally in your browser — no uploads.
